The seven-division champion will look to etch her name further into the history books Saturday when she defends her Ring, WBA and WBO featherweight titles against Reina Tellez at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on DAZN. In beating Tellez, Serrano hopes she can take another step closer to reaching 50 wins and setting the record for knockout victories by a woman.

“I truly want to continue to open the doors for women in this sport,” Serrano said at the final press conference Tuesday. “It’s been a long journey, and I love seeing these women here grow and get the opportunities, get the better pay days and [I’m taking it] one fight at a time, but I do have goals. I need the record of knockouts. I need 50 wins, so there are certain goals. I gotta keep on going.”

The record is held by 2020 International Boxing Hall of Famer Christy Martin, who won 32 of her 49 fights by knockout. Serrano is one knockout away from tying Martin.

Serrano-Tellez will be contested over 10 three-minute rounds. Serrano was originally set to face Erika Cruz, but an atypical finding in her Voluntary Anti-Doping Association test led to her being replaced by Tellez (13-0-1, 5 KOs) on December 18.

Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs) is returning to 126 pounds after consecutive razor-thin decision defeats to 140-pound champion champion Katie Taylor. In their third and final meeting, she lost by majority decision to Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) on July 11 in New York.

Serrano, 37, will be fighting on her home island of Puerto Rico for the first time since 2021, when she defeated Daniela Romina Bermudez by ninth-round knockout. Her bout against Tellez will mark the fifth time she’s fought in Puerto Rico as a pro.

“There’s a different emotion when I fight here in Puerto Rico, because the love is real,” Serrano said. “It’s genuine, and we bring it different. Latinos bring it different. Boricuas bring it different. Everyone on the card is going to be able to feel the energy in that arena, and they’re going to bring the best out of each other.”

Serrano has long been a pioneering force in women’s boxing. Even with the accolades she’s accumulated since debuting in 2009, Serrano wants her legacy to go beyond her own accomplishments.

“I want to be remembered as a game changer,” she said. “As someone who is helping the sport, women’s boxing and sports in general. … In the beginning, women had to have a job [and] had to have a nine-to-five because we weren’t getting paid the way we are getting paid now, and it’s still not the best. Not everyone is getting paid the best.

“I’ve been blessed, but we have other lives as well. I want to see women’s boxing grow. I want the women to be able to concentrate just on boxing, just on the sport, on their craft and get what they deserve and get the pay that they deserve.”

Joshua’s promoters Matchroom offered their “deepest condolences and prayers” to the family and friends of Ghami and Ayodele, who was also known as ‘Latz’.

“With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele have tragically passed away,” read a statement.

“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn said: “With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”

A spokesperson for Joshua said Ghami and Ayodele were “integral” to the boxer’s team, adding the news of their deaths was “truly shocking and devastating”.

‘Massive parts of the Joshua machine’

Ghami was Joshua’s full-time sport and exercise rehabilitation coach and had worked with the 36-year-old for more than 10 years.

He helped the former heavyweight champion prepare for some of the biggest bouts of his career, including the title-winning fight against Wladimir Klitschko in 2017 and this month’s win over Jake Paul.

Ghami has also worked with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell and the Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green.

Just hours before the crash, Joshua posted a video on Instagram of him playing table tennis with his long-time friend Ayodele, a personal trainer.

Boxing expert Steve Bunce described Ghami and Ayodele as “two of Joshua’s closest friends”.

“They’ve been with him, if not from the start, at least very early on. Latz is AJ’s personal trainer and Sina is his strength and conditioning man. They are with him all the time,” Bunce told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He calls them his boys. They’re more than that. They are friends. They may have strict jobs, they might be his strength and conditioning coach, his personal trainer, his dietitian, his nutritionist, but they’re close and he loves that close circle.

“Sina and Latz are massive parts of the Anthony Joshua machine.”

Fellow boxer Chris Eubank Jr was among those to pay tribute to Ghami and Ayodele, calling them “genuinely good men”.

Joshua was in Nigeria after stopping American YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul in the sixth round of their heavyweight bout in Miami earlier this month.

Writing on X,, external Paul said: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Former New Zealand rugby star Sonny Bill Williams posted pictures with Joshua and Latif,, external adding: “Rest easy brother Abdul Latif, may the most high make it easy for your loved ones.”

British bantamweight Shannon Courtenay said:, external “RIP Sina and Latz, two good guys. Last week we’re all having fun in Miami and today you’re gone, life really is too short. May the Lord look over their loved ones during this awful time.”

Video from the scene showed Joshua being helped out from the back seat of a wrecked large car.

Five adult men were involved in the crash in total, Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said.

They added that Joshua and another man – the vehicle’s driver – were rescued by the boxer’s security team.

The incident involved two vehicles, a black Lexus and a stationary red commercial truck, and took place on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway at around 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT) on Monday.

The FRSC said the Lexus was “suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”, based on preliminary findings.

It said the car appeared to have “lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre” and crashed into the stationary truck by the side of the road.

Joshua had only just returned to the ring after more than a year out, beating Jake Paul on Netflix in what was a huge pay day, and he was in Nigeria simply to spend New Year with family when this tragedy struck.

The plan had been for Joshua to fight again in Saudi Arabia in February before eventually moving towards the long-talked-about Tyson Fury bout later in 2026. But right now, those plans feel secondary.

Joshua has lost two people close to him, friends first and foremost, including his long-time strength and conditioning coach Ghami, and the emotional impact of that is impossible to measure. Ghami was by his side throughout fight week in Miami, and joined him in the ring after his win over Paul.

Whatever he decides to do next in the twilight of his career almost feels insignificant, with the boxing world united in hoping that one of Britain’s most accomplished fighters comes through this ordeal in good health.

Nigerian president Bola Ahmed Tinubu posted to social media that he spoke with Joshua and Joshua’s mother to offer his condolences on the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s associates. 

“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami in the recent accident,” Tunubu posted. “I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care.”

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time near Sagamu, according to local officials. Circumstances of the accident are under investigation. 

“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” local police said in a statement. “He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”

Preliminary investigations indicated the SUV carrying Joshua was “traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck,” according to the Federal Road Safety Corps. 

Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, posted a photo of the accident on social media that showed Joshua standing outside the crash site and said ambulances had been called. The police chief of the local precinct told the Associated Press that Joshua was taken to a local hospital to be “treated for his injuries.”

Joshua had returned to Nigeria, the homeland of his parents, after breaking the jaw of Jake Paul in his knockout victory of the YouTuber-turned-boxer just over a week ago. Paul posted a statement on social media up on learning of Joshua’s involvement in the crash stating, “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Joshua was targeting a quick return to the ring following his victory over Paul, with promoter Eddie Hearn pointing to a possible bout with kickboxer Rico Verhoeven in late February or early March while they awaited a showdown with fellow former British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury later in 2026. 

That timeline for a return to the ring is now in question and will depend on the injuries he sustained and how long it will take for him to fully heal.

The decision leaves Alvarez, who has vowed to continue fighting, in a tricky spot. He may well look to win back his super-middleweight belts, which are now to be scattered and fought for among the top contenders, but that route does not offer any names on the scale of Crawford.

The 28-year-old suffered his second loss of his professional boxing career, with his first being to Tommy Fury in 2023, and had to undergo surgery after Joshua broke his jaw in two places.

Britain’s two-time world heavyweight champion struggled to put a stop to Paul in the early rounds, but the American also had difficulty staying on his feet throughout the bout.

“It’s not that hard to get your a** beat,” Paul said on the Impaulsive podcast, co-hosted by his brother Logan Paul.

“I won two rounds then he won two, then I got dropped.

“But I was doing good, my cardio, just the mental pressure of the big guy, and sparring the big people is different than the 10oz gloves so I was feeling his power a lot more.

“It was a great experience, I learnt a lot in there.

“I wish I had more than like three weeks to put on more muscle so I could really hit him. My biggest mistake was not doing altitude training.

“I see where I could have done better so I’m a little disappointed but I also know how good he is. I had him wobbled at one point, but he had his hands up better this fight.”

This was only Paul’s 14th professional bout after making his debut in 2020, while Joshua had fought 32 times professionally with 28 wins, 25 of which had come by knockout.

It was expected that Joshua would clean up the fight in the opening rounds due to his extensive experience and size.

Having undergone surgery on his jaw, Paul described it as feeling “like a baseball is in there” as he appeared to be visibly swollen on the lower left side of his face.

What’s next for Paul?

Lasting six rounds with Joshua has planted a thought in Paul’s mind of who his next opponent could be – Francis Ngannou.

The former UFC fighter made his professional boxing debut in a defeat against Tyson Fury in 2023.

Ngannou was then beaten by Joshua via a second-round knockout in 2024.

Now Paul believes Ngannou has something to prove after lasting more rounds against Joshua than the UFC heavyweight.

“I told everyone I would do better than Francis [Ngannou],” Paul said. “Francis is low-key soft.”

But before he steps back into the ring, Paul will be taking a break to support his speed skating fiancé, Jutta Leerdam, at the Winter Olympics in February.

Paul given ‘reality check’

Paul had a “serious reality check” in his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua and will not think he can reach world-class level, says Sky Sports expert Johnny Nelson.

“He sees an Adonis of a fighter, former world champion Anthony Joshua, in the other corner and that’s when reality hit fiction.

The unbeaten 24-year-old could be on a collision course with American Alycia Baumgardner, who called for a battle against the Brit, after she defended her WBO and IBF super-featherweight titles with a points win over Canadian Leila Beaudoin.

In a move to attain equality in boxing, Baumgardner’s fight against Beaudoin was over three-minute rounds, the same as male fighters, and the Detroit fighter had vacated one of her belts to ensure longer rounds were introduced.

Beaudoin was floored in the seventh round, but provided stubborn resistance until the final bell as Baumgardner took a unanimous-decision victory with totals of 117-110, 117-110 and 118-109.

Earlier in the evening, two former UFC champions shared the ring as Anderson Silva produced a ruthless second-round stoppage of Tyron Woodley.

Silva unloaded a jolting uppercut, followed by cuffing hooks, and Woodley wilted to the canvas.

The 38-year-old Crawford is the only male boxer to capture three unified division titles, which he accomplished with that unanimous decision over Alvarez before 70,482 fans at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

That gave Crawford the super middleweight championship and a 42-0 record with 31 knockouts. His final 20 bouts came with a belt on the line.

Paul was hospitalised with a broken jaw after former heavyweight champion Joshua hit him with a thunderous right hand during their boxing bout in Miami. Paul posted an update on Saturday night, alongside an x-ray of his jaw broken in two places.

“Just got out of surgery. Everything went smooth,” he wrote on social media after surgery to insert two titanium plates. “Thanks for all the love. Lots of pain and stiffness. Got to eat liquids for seven days.”

Paul is now facing a medical suspension from boxing for at least 45 days – and likely more. The Florida State Athletic Commission has rules in place that prevent fighters getting back in the ring for at least 45 days after being knocked out.

Considering his injuries, the suspension can be extended to 60 or 90 days as well. Paul was given a 60-day suspension last year after beating Mike Perry, which came after being assessed by a physician. Considering he wasn’t knocked out on that occasion, he’s likely facing a longer layoff this time around.

Paul and Joshua will both be assessed by medical professionals after their bout, and even Joshua is required to stand down for seven days under boxing’s rules. A close friend of Paul’s revealed after the bout that initial assessments are his jaw will need 4-6 weeks to fully heal.

Why Anthony Joshua will lose $66 million of prize purse

Joshua and Paul both reportedly received about US$93 million for the fight – $140 million Australian. But because the fight occurred in America, Joshua is set to cop multiple taxes that will see him lose nearly half of the prize purse and walk away with less than Paul.

British star Joshua is set to be taxed by the US government for the earnings, as well as when he gets home to the UK. He’ll also have to fork out some of the money in National Insurance contributions back home.

There’s no state tax in Florida, but the US government is likely to charge an income tax of 37 per cent (about AU$52 million of the purse). Another $11.3 million will have to be paid to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (British tax), and $2.8m in National Insurance contributions.

All up Joshua will part ways with about $66m, leaving him with $74m in his pocket out of the total purse of $140m. Paul will only be taxed the $52 million by the US government, meaning he’ll actually get to keep more than Joshua.

After a historic rough patch that saw him lose eight straight fights to end his UFC tenure, the one-time UFC interim lightweight champion has turned things around in 2025, picking up his second win of the year at Misfits Mania. Taking on Warren Spencer, Ferguson snatched a hard-fought unanimous decision win (49-45, 49-45, 48-46) to become the promotion’s new middleweight boxing champion.

Ferguson, 42, started by pressuring Spencer and chipping away with jabs high and low. For only his second boxing match, Ferguson put together a strong approach that built as the fight went on, culminating in a successful combination that dropped Spencer in the second round.

Spencer started to pick up his pace after that, but was too far behind to take it on the scorecards.

The middle rounds were more of the same, with Ferguson only further succeeding in landing his offense. Spencer was never able to overcome the volume and stalking that his counterpart applied, however Round 4 provided Ferguson with a brief scare, as Spencer found a clean body shot that opened up Ferguson’s high guard, allowing some problematic punches to get through. He was visibly hurt and lost the round, only to rally and nearly put away Spencer late in Round 5.

Ferguson made his boxing debut in August when he scored a third-round stoppage of Nathaniel “Salt Papi” Bustamante to finally halt his nightmarish losing streak. The match served as the first win in any discipline since 2019 for “El Cucuy.” Now that he holds the Misfits middleweight title, Ferguson will presumably be sticking around for more boxing matches with the promotion.

As for the 32-year-old Spencer (3-3), he has yet to score a win in Misfits. On the same card where Ferguson made his debut against Bustamante, Spencer suffered a 15-second loss in MMA to Dillon Danis.

In Saturday’s Misfits Mania main event, Andrew Tate — the controversial influencer who’s been charged with sexual assault in multiple countries — lost a majority decision (57-57, 58-56, 58-56) to Netflix reality star Chase DeMoor for the Misfits heavyweight title.
